Guiding Themes of the Constitution
In my government class I learned about the six guiding themes of the constitution which are, popular sovereignty, limited government, separation of power, checks and balances, judicial review and federalism. These concepts helped me understand the constitution much better. Each of the these guiding themes have different meanings. Popular sovereignty means power should not reside with the government or it's leaders but instead the people. Limited government means that the government has limited power which means American people and their government must follow a system of laws.
The other half is separation of powers is based on a philosophers idea and divides government into three branches: Executive which is the president. Legislative which is congress and house of representatives. Lastly Judicial which is the supreme court. Checks and balances has to do with the above each branch has different powers and can keep each other in check. Judicial review says that the supreme court is appointed by the president.
The importance of the six guiding themes makes it easier to understand how the government and its constitution works. By understanding made my government class more interesting. Not only did this topic made it interesting but all the other ones that I did not fully understand but this one was one of those.
